There are three primary AFV fuel system configurations:
1. Dedicated AFVs have one fuel system operating exclusively only on the alternative fuel, such as compressed natural gas (CNG) or electric. These are used most often by centrally-fueled vehicles.
2. Bi-Fuel AFVs have two separate fuel systems; one dedicated to an alternative fuel (such as CNG or LPG) and one for gasoline.
3. Flex-Fuel AFVs (E85) most common for both government and commercial use, and can operate on either the alternative fuel, gasoline, or any combination of the two up to 85% of the alternative fuel.
4. Hybrid Electric Vehicles (HEV) operate on a combination of fuel and electrical systems.
5. Electric Vehicles operating exclusively on rechargeable electrical systems.
